Little Kissing Mice - free amigurumi pattern

Here’s a pattern to make a pair of sweet little mice that just love to kiss, perfect to make for Valentine's Day. They are made all in one, with no separate parts to sew on, so they are quick and easy to crochet. Make them in any colours you like, you can make them totally in a natural fur colour if you want, or choose any colour for their bodies. They will sit upright on their own, but they like snuggling up to each other even more.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
st = stitch or stitches
ss = slipstitch
sc = single crochet (US), double crochet (UK)
dc = double crochet (US), treble crochet (UK)
tog = together
sc2tog = decrease by working two sc together
FLO = work in front loop only
FO = fasten off

Approximate size: 5cm/2" long without tail.

General instructions:
Work in rounds unless otherwise stated and do not join rounds unless told to. Use a stitch marker to mark the start of a round - a small piece of different coloured yarn placed under the stitch at the start of the round will do. To start a round, you can use the magic ring method, but I prefer to ch 2, and work the appropriate number of sc into 1st ch. If you work the sc over the tail of yarn as well you can use that to pull the hole tight.

When changing from one colour of yarn to another work the stitch before the change until there are two loops left on the hook. Then use the new colour for the final yarn over hook and pull through.

Stuff as you go along.

Work through both loops of stitches unless otherwise indicated.

You will need:
Small amounts of yarn in a natural colour for the head and tail, and any colour for the body, double knitting or worsted weight.
Small amounts of black yarn to embroider eyes.
Small amount of stuffing.
3.5mm (E) hook.
Tapestry needle.

Start with natural colour yarn.
Round 1: Ch 2, work 4 sc into 1st ch - 4 st.
Round 2: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 2 times - 6 st.
Round 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 st] 2 times - 8 st.
Round 4: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 st] 2 times - 10 st.
Round 5: Sc in each st around – 10 st.
Round 6: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 st] 2 times - 12 st.
Round 7: Sc in next 6 st, [ear, in FLO of next st: ss, ch 2, 5 dc, ch 2, ss], sc in next 3 st, [ear as before], sc in next st – 12 st (counting each ear as one st).
Round 8: Sc in each st around, working into the back loop behind each ear – 12 st.
Change to yarn for body.
Round 9: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 6 st – 15 st.
Round 10: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 st] 3 times – 18 st.
Round 11: Sc in each st around – 18 st.
Round 12: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 st] 3 times – 21 st.
Round 13 - 15: (3 rounds) Sc in each st around – 21 st.
Round 16: [Sc2tog, sc in next 5 st] 2 times, sc2tog, sc in next 2 st, change to natural colour yarn, [tail: ss in next st, ch 20, miss ch next to hook, ss 19, ss back into original st and change back to body colour yarn], sc in next 2 st – 18 st.
Round 17: Sc2tog 2 times, sc in next 6 st, sc2tog 4 times – 12 st.
Round 18: Sc2tog 6 times – 6 st.
FO, leaving a length of yarn. Finish stuffing and use black yarn to sew eyes. Sew up bottom of mouse neatly.

  2. Hi, Lucy! Love your blog and your work! One question. When you say that we have to sew differents parts of our amigurumi, do you mean with yarn and crochet, or with thread and needle? I want to make your totoro, and I understand all the instructions, but I don't know how do you sew the eyes and the tummy. (in general, I'm so bad joining the pieces...) could you tell me? thanks a lot! (sorry my english, I'm spanish)

  3. Hi Paula, it might be clearer to say that you embroider the eyes - use the black yarn and sew a couple of very short lines for each eye.

    When you've finished stuffing your mouse you use the length of yarn that was left when you fastened off to sew the hole at the bottom shut. The last round had 6 stitches, so I usually sew through every other stitch and pull tight to close the hole. Take the yarn through the body and cut.

  4. Oh, lucy, my mistake... I wrote the doubt in this post, but I ment how do you join the tummy to the body of your Totoro Amigurumi. with yarn or with regular thread?

  5. I use the yarn that the tummy is made of, it merges with the tummy then, but you could use regular thread if you found that easier to sew with.

  6. So adorable! I love all of your patterns! Out of curiosity, what weight yarn do you use? I typically have worsted on hand, and using a 3.5mm hook with that cramps up my hand something awful.

  7. Thank you! I use DK (double knitting) weight, which is a bit thinner than worsted, so you should be fine to go up a hook size.

  8. Hi again, Lucy! thanks for your advice :) I have a question, Lucy. I would like to translate your Totoro pattern to spanish in my blog. Of course, linking to the original and your web. Is it possible? My email is pauladecaso@hotmail.com, if you have any question. I'm waiting for your answer... thanks anyway!!

  9. Hi! I love your patterns! Thanks for posting them as free. I've stuffed some with catnip for my kitties and they absolutely love them. I've gotten a lot of requests from people to sell them (mainly the bats). Would I be allowed to do this as long as I credit you? I didn't see any info here or on your raverly page. Thanks!!

  12. Hi Lucy,

    Thanks for the cute pattern! I'm relatively new to crocheting, and am just a little confused about the ears. I was hoping you could help! After you ch 2, what stitch do the 5 dc's go into?

    Sorry if that's a really silly question - as I said, still very new to crocheting but would love to make these mice. Thanks very much!

  13. Hi Tracy,

    Thanks! All the instructions for the ear, inside the brackets, is worked into the front loop of the same stitch. [ear, in FLO of next st: ss, ch 2, 5 dc, ch 2, ss], so you do a slip stitch, then chain 2, then work 5 dc into the same st you did the ss in, then chain 2, then slip stitch back into the same stitch, remembering to work only in the front loop, so you can use the back loop on the next round. I hope that helps!

  16. Hello, I'm trying to make these cute mice, but in round 9, it says do 2 sc in first st then one in next 3 st 3 times..then do 1 sc in next 6 stitches.. 15 stitches...??? That is more than 15 stitches...that would be 21 stitches...I'm confused. Could you please clarify. Thx

    ReplyDelete
  17. No, it's 2 sc in next st, then sc in next st, and do that three times, so 3st x 3 = 9, then sc in next 6 st = 15 st in total.

  21. Sorry I'm probably senile at 74 but am having fits with row 17 of the mice. Can't figure we're to put stitches around/over tail. I'm doing for a nursing home patient who wants a mouse house AND 3 blind mice. Please clarify thank you

  22. On round 17, when you get to the tail, work into the first slip stitch, take the yarn under the tail, miss the second slip stitch, and then work into the next stitch on the round.

    I hope that helps!

  23. There isn't, but I have been thinking of doing some video tutorials for some of my free patterns. Maybe in the new year.

  24. Hi Lucy! Thank you so much for such a precious pattern! I've made a set and they are already claimed by my kids! Would you mind if I showed a few ladies how to make these at my next crochet club meeting?

  26. Hello LucyRavenscar, first off Happy New Year to you! Thank you so much for this free pattern I am just starting to crochet and decided to start with your mices! I am just doing one and will stuff it with dried cat nip for this kitten we've found and adopted from my yard. My mom cannot read english patterns so I want to ask your permission to translate it for her, I will probably make her a video that I would upload on YouTube. I even wonder if I could let it accessible to the french community ? I am not a professional youtuber and am not looking to make profit. I can even share you the result before submitting it if you wish. Thanks in advance for looking into this possibility. ^_^

  27. Hi Julie Bee,
    I would be very happy for you to translate the pattern and make a video. If you can send me links to these I can share them here.
    Thanks!

    1. Hello Lucy and thank you for your return. I am struggling with the tail part and so I was looking to find help via another mouse patern in french and happened to fall on this video here : https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GofATk7JthA

      It sure looks like the same model. So I might not even have to make a video for my mom after all ! (・o・;)

  35. Maybe I'm just being dumb (I am brand new Amigurumi) but on the kissing mice, I don't see instructions for the tails. Just sewing up the bottom.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You make the tail on round 16, so you don't have to sew it on separately.
