Adorable Alpacas

Recently I was asked by Practical Publishing to design some alpaca patterns for their Crochet Gifts magazine/bookazine. I've been away for the weekend, and I came back to find that the magazine had arrived (I think it's due out in the shops on 24th April), and I was delighted to find my colourful alpacas on the front cover!

They're made using Stylecraft Alpaca DK, an acrylic yarn with some alpaca wool mixed in, which makes it lovely and soft. There are two sizes of alpaca you can make, an adult and a baby, and you can make them in natural colours, or make them in fun, bright colours as I did.

Having just had a skim through the magazine it's full of interesting projects including lots of lovely toys and accessories (I definitely want to try the leather and crochet bracelet), so I'm really pleased my patterns are in there.

*Update: you can now buy the pattern in my Etsy shop *

  4. It's such a pity that I can't buy that magazine in Germany! Your amigurumi are so cute <3 And the alpacas, too! I like the hair on their hair very much :D

  5. Thanks! Keroro, if you click on the Crochet Gifts link you can buy the magazine in a digital format, or get it sent to Germany. I will also be able to sell the pattern myself in a few months.

  6. Congratulations! That's super exciting. I'm going to go get the magazine because the bracelets sound like a win for my nieces, and I definitely want an alpaca for myself!

    1. They are, I love them. I made some caterpillars too, I just had to copy The Very Hungry Caterpillar for my son using your pattern, pics on instagram (Instagram.com/missminimakes), telling everyone about your patterns. Thank you for all the work you've put into these & for posting them free x

  11. I got the magazine today! Started on the alpacas but some of the instructions don't make sense, I cant fit the round instructions into that round, as I run out of stitches!

  12. Which round is it? Let me know and I'll check in case there's a mistake.

  14. Hello Lucy,
I'm making the Alpaca baby after purchasing the magazine on a wintery weekend in Melbourne, Australia.
I am new to patterns (usually just free form toys and blankets etc). I'm a bit confused about your eye instructions for the Cria. Was I meant to put eyes in at round 7 when making that round or does it refer to put the eyes in at the right spot by counting the rounds?
It would be great to have more instructions and a photo of the face attaching to body as I'm new to amigurumi. Thanks! It's otherwise a breeze!

  15. You push the eyes through the face, after it's completed, between rounds 6 and 7, just a little higher that the mid-line. Then, after you've completed round 18 of the head, push the eyes into the head, between rounds 12 and 13. Put the washers on the backs of the eyes to secure them.
