hi! thanks so much for the pattern! i'm having a problem though...i don't have a 3.5 mm hook, the closest ones i have are 3 mm and 4 mm. i tried to make a few elephants with my 3 mm hooks, and the ears always come out really really strange (like super small) anddd i always seem to have an average of 2 or 4 extra stitches when i do round 12 (so right before i end the round). any ideas on what i should do? Thanks again!

Hi! I think a 3 or 4mm hook should work, it depends on the yarn you're using. I used double knitting weight, maybe you should experiment with your hooks and yarn, do a few rounds (6, 12, 18 sc) and see which hook works best. The main thing is not to have large gaps between the stitches.

On round 12, make sure you're only working into the back loops behind the ears, and not into any of the slip stitches used to make the ears. It can be quite fiddly and hard to see - maybe that 4mm hook would be easier!

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Thank you very much for the lovely patterns. They are really adorable. I have made the elephant and the pig once I found them here. I found your patterns very creative. Could you explain the reason behind why the crochet method of the elephant is not a close replicate of that of the pig? I found a round start at the lower side for the pig while a round start at the upper side for the elephant.

Thank you.

Sherri

Hi Sherri,

I'm glad you liked the patterns! The reason for the difference is because, when you crochet in the round, the start of each round moves very slightly ahead of the start of the previous round (because of the way that each stitch is slightly to the right of the one it's worked into). Since there are more rounds in the elephant pattern before you get to the main part of the body, the start of the round is in a different place.

Awesome pattern - thank you! I just made one for my friend who just adores elephants. I think she will love it. I made mine with 7.5mm safety eyes and it looks really cute.

Thanks! I bet it looks good with safety eyes.

Hey i just wanted to sya thank you so much for this pattern i LOVE elephants sooo much and this one is just the cutest , but i have a problem and i'm hoping you can help me solve what is going wrong . i made 2 of the elephants 1 with a 4 mm hook and 1 with a 3 mm hook and they seem to be both tilting thier heads very far , it seems as if they are dragging thier right ear on the ground . i hope you can help me with this problem i am having . [= Brittney < 3

LucyRavenscar said...

Hi Brittney - I'm not sure, but I think the problem might be that the feet are not quite in the right place. You need to count your stitches carefully, and mark the start of each round, to make sure you do the ears and the feet in the right place. I hope that helps.

could you please explain what BLO SC is? and what about FLO? sorry I am kind of a new crocheter and haven`t gotten quite all the new terms down! THanks and the pattern is adorable!

LucyRavenscar said...

kat, click the link at the top. It takes you to another pattern which has all the abbreviations and other info. BLO means work in the back loop only, FLO means work in the front loop only.

This is a fantastic pattern, really clear and easy to follow and it makes up so fast! I've been searching for ages for a tiny elephant pattern I can make in one piece rather than trying to sew tiny bits together and this has just been perfect.

I'm going to have to make hundreds for all my friends now :D

LucyRavenscar said...

Thank you! Sewing things together is always the worst part, so it's good to avoid it if you can.

Thank you so much for this pattern! I must have crocheted 200 of these and sold them for Autism Awareness Month. I wound up making over $1300 for charity! Everybody loved these elephants, and they took no time at all to make.

That's wonderful Nicole! Thanks for letting me know.

Thank you very much for this pattern!

I made an Olli (that is a dutch elephant) based on your pattern: with a little changes it is now a real Olli! And I learned the popcorn-stitch I didn't know it before.

This is my elephant Olli: http://kapitein-haak.blogspot.nl/2013/05/en-hier-is-olli.html

Thanks! I had a look at your Olli, it's really cute!

hello, I tried to make this elephant, but I can not, I can explain is how to make the ears, thanks
my email is claudia_azurdia@yahoo.es

LucyRavenscar said...

The main thing about the ears is that you crochet them in the front loops. Then, in the next round, you work in the back loops where the ears are. Just try following the pattern very carefully, it should make sense when you do it.

Working BLO at the trunk section gives it a nice different texture :)

MAKES A GOOD FINGER PUPPET IF YOU LEAVE THE END OPEN AFTER THE HIND LEGS

LucyRavenscar said...

Good idea! I think that works with a lot of my small animals.

Thank you so much for this pattern! I made this elephant as part of a safari mobile for my baby niece. I also used your Boris the Lion pattern. Love your site :)

I'm sorry if you've answered this already elsewhere, but can I sell animigurri made from your patterns?

LucyRavenscar said...

Oh cute, the mobile looks great! Yes, I'm fine with people selling items made from my patterns, if you can just credit me or link to the pattern, that would be great.
